MEDIA RELEASE - Suspect Arrested for Attempted Homicide, Robbery and Arson

Irwindale, CA:  Irwindale Police Department officers responded to an assault investigation that occurred at a business in the 200 block of Live Oak Avenue in the city of Irwindale on Tuesday, June 9, 2020. Officers learned that two victims had been confronted by a suspect who was armed with a handgun and robbed of gasoline.  During the incident, the suspect attacked one of the victims, hitting, kicking, and threatening him. The suspect also “pistol-whipped” the victim with the handgun.  The suspect then fled the location in a 2002 Honda Accord.

Irwindale Police Department detectives began an investigation into the incident and identified Hugo Wilfredo Portillo, Jr., a 41 year old resident of Barstow, California, as the suspect.  During the course of the investigation, Portillo was also connected as the suspect to an arson fire that occurred later in the evening on June 9, 2020 to a structure at the same location where the assault happened.

An arrest warrant was obtained for Portillo’s arrest and on Tuesday, June 16, 2020, detectives from the Barstow Police Department, using information provided by detectives from the Irwindale Police Department, served the arrest warrant at Portillo’s home in the city of Barstow, where Portillo was arrested without incident.  The 2002 Honda Accord, as well as other relevant evidence, was seized during the course of the investigation.

Irwindale Police Department detectives transported Portillo back to Los Angeles County after his arrest, where he was booked at the Irwindale Police Department for attempted homicide, armed robbery, criminal threats and arson related charges, as well as violation of the terms of his probation. 

Portillo is currently being held at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles on $2,000,000.00 bail pending his court appearance.
