MEDIA RELEASE ~ Hammer and Kitchen Knife Used in Assault with a Deadly Weapon Attack

Media Release

Irwindale, California: On Sunday, August 9, 2020 at about 4:33 PM, City of Irwindale police officers responded to the Arco AM/PM station located at 15875 Arrow Highway in the city of Irwindale regarding a male brandishing a knife.

On arrival, officers learned that a male adult suspect had become upset about an empty soda machine in the store. The suspect produced a hammer and began to threaten several employees. He then armed himself with a large kitchen knife, which he brandished and swung at the employees, all while continuing to threaten them.

At one point the suspect kicked one of the victims in the chest, causing him to fall. The suspect then struck the victim on his hands/arms multiple times with the hammer. While fleeing the store, the suspect assaulted another employee on the arm with a “stun gun” type device. The suspect then fled the location on a bicycle.

Investigating officers quickly located the suspect a short distance away from the gas station and he was detained and arrested without incident.

A construction-type claw hammer, a kitchen knife with a 5½ inch blade and a metal flashlight with an integrated electric stun device were found in the suspect’s possession at the time. These items were recovered by the arresting officers.

Edger Morelos, a 35-year-old resident of Baldwin Park, was arrested and booked on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, battery, exhibiting a deadly weapon, assault with a stun gun device, being a convicted felon in possession of a stun gun device and possession of drug paraphernalia. It was found that Morelos is currently on probation and had an outstanding warrant for his arrest.

Morelos is currently being held at the Los Angeles County Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles on $115,000.00 bail, pending his court appearance.
