MEDIA RELEASE - Investigation Leads to Arrest of Burglary/Grand Theft Suspect

Media Release

On Wednesday, May 27, 2020, Irwindale police officers investigated a commercial burglary at a refrigerant recycling business located in the 5200 block of Fourth Street in the city of Irwindale that resulted in the loss of multiple cans of compressed refrigerant. Over the following weeks, the business was burglarized additional times, with additional cans of refrigerant being taken, along with power tools and other items.  The loss and property damage suffered by the business was estimated to be in excess of $20,000.00.

Using information obtained from security cameras in the area, investigators were able to identify two different Toyota Tacoma pick-up trucks used in the burglaries, as well as a description of the suspect involved in the crimes.  In some of the security footage, the suspect is seen wearing a distinctive red and black baseball cap with a unique logo.

On Thursday, August 6, 2020, investigators conducted a surveillance operation and located one of the Toyota Tacoma pick-up trucks used in the burglaries and saw that the driver matched the suspect’s description.  A traffic stop was initiated in the city of Duarte and, after additional investigation, the driver was arrested on suspicion of burglary.  A subsequent search warrant service led to the recovery of the distinctive baseball cap worn in the burglaries, along with additional evidence connecting the driver to the crimes.

Juan Antonio Garcia Hernandez, a 28-year-old resident of Duarte, was booked at the West Covina Police Department jail on burglary and grand theft charges on August 6th.  IPD detectives presented the case to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office this week, resulting in formal charges of burglary and grand theft being filed against Garcia Hernandez.

Garcia Hernandez is currently being held at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Twin Towers Correctional Facility in the city of Los Angeles on $165,100.00 bail.
