MEDIA RELEASE ~ On Duty LAPD Police Vehicle Struck in Traffic Collision

Irwindale, CA:   On Monday, March 8, 2021, at about 3:16 A.M., Irwindale Police Department officers and the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to the 14800 block of Olive Street in the city of Irwindale regarding a traffic collision involving an on-duty police vehicle from the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD).

On arrival, our officers found that two uniformed and on-duty police officers from the Los Angeles Police Department were in the area conducting a follow-up investigation to a crime that occurred in the city of Los Angeles.  Their marked LAPD police SUV was parked in the westbound lane of Olive Street, just west of Park Avenue in the city of Irwindale. The police vehicle’s lights and rear facing amber emergency lights were activated at the time. While conducting their investigation, the LAPD police vehicle was struck from behind by an uninvolved vehicle that was traveling west on Olive Street.

One LAPD officer was seated in the front passenger seat at the time of the collision and the second office was standing outside the vehicle, next to the open passenger door.  Both officers received minor injuries and were transported to the Los Angeles County/USC Medical Center via ambulance.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 66 year old male, was not injured in the collision.  He remained at the scene and cooperated with the investigating officers.

The Irwindale Police Department is investigating this traffic collision. The cause of the collision remains under investigation, however it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor.
